What is this site?
The short, to-the-point version:
In 2002 I started taking photos. I got better at it. Now, I spend a fair chunk of my spare time working on photos and this seems like a good place to share them.
The badly written, rambling version
In theory, this site serves as the repository of various online projects, mostly my photo expeditions and the
associated event reports.
In practice, it's never that easy, mind you.
This site happened almost entirely by accident, and every time I've tried to construct a defined vision of the site,
life comes along and makes sure that it doesn't happen. With that in mind, let's walk through the evolution of the site.
Perhaps the best way to start was with my initial preamble over why I actually made the site at all...
...or not - it's pretty corny, and really if you want to you can find it on a web archive somewhere. Suffice to say, I started with photography and was h0ooked, at some point actually getting to the point where I woke up in the middle of the night and took a picture in my sleep. Yeah, I'm that sad - when you're trying to take photos in your sleep, you need an outlet or a girlfriend badly, and sadly no luck on the latter. So, I made a website, and immediately my vision for what it'd be was completely trashed by reality.
My plans started with trying to just give the photos to other people, with my site acting as sort of a porfolio. The problem was, nobody was using the photos, and I was left to post my own. Upon starting to post my own, the commentary was more popular than the photos, so I changed gears and started with event reports.
Once again, things changed, and really it turned I didn't have that much to say most of the time, and as I struggled for commentary, the photos were put on hold. Once again, things needed a change. Then, I moved to Toronto, started grad school and had my ass kicked by it, putting the site on hold for a few years.
Grad school came to an end, I snagged an expensive piece of paper, and bought a digital SLR. Walking away from mass photography, I started having fun again with individual photo shoots, both at cons and other assorted events. Time passed, I actually started getting the hang of photography again and the photos improved, and the commentary pretty much vanished.
At the time of writing this, 2007 is ending, and the site and content continues to evolve as my photo skills and travel plans do.
So, what's happening next?
Hopefully some more photos to come - maybe some stories attached to them here and there. Also, I'm working on a guide to con photography to help people who are looking for answers. Beyond that, I'm not sure really...
Me
Not much to say - now an ex-student, I code in my 9-5 (or 6, or 7) life and after hours I further the destruction of my hands by working on photos, and in theory, this site. Besides that, I seek out photo opportunities of various sorts - conventions, photoshoots, daily life, and whatever else crops up. My LiveJournal is probably a better place to get specifics, when I occasionally post publically about my goings and doings. It's also a place to get in touch with me via comments or any assorted chat media.
