Our evening with Harry...

Slash away!

Official home page  |  Events  |  Back home

*NOTE* due to having no life for the last few months, I have resorted to grasping at the slightest occasion for doing something to update my site.

Originally, I was going to plumb the depths of my photos to find more interesting shots to showcase, but I lost my archive, meaning no old stuff to pull out of the cellar.

So, I latched onto a group of fangirls going to see the next Harry Potter movie in order to hopefully get enough pictures and spew forth enough text to fill a mini-report.

Meet Harry Potter...
Meet Ginny Weasley...
Okay, some of you may not be up to speed on the whole Harry Potter thing. So, I'm selflessly taking up valuable event report space in order to explain the whole situation as I know it...

Well, that or I'm just doing everything in my power to fill space...

I don't know all the details from the books, since I haven't actually read them (bad me), so I'm relying on what I hear and see from the fangirls I know...

Harry Potter tells the tale of a sexually repressed band of heroes who, through exchanging glances, communicate large and personal information about their sex lives together.

I bet you're saying either "duh!" or "what the hell are you talking about?!?", but you've got to read between the lines...

The love is there, but the harsh confines of Hogwarts' school of magic requires that the only stiff thing to be seen is an upper lip...

Meet Hermione Granger...
Meet Ron Weasley, sorta...

You see, when one character says to another that they're "breaking the rules", they really mean "take me over your knee now with your Nimbus 2000 of love!"

Well, that's the impression I've got. You see, I was looking for excepts from the book online, and I've found some tales about the characters that I'm pretty sure aren't in the books. Unless you infer, that is...

So, if it attracts slash, you know what else it attracts...

Fangirls...

When the fangirls go to the movies, I go too. Well, it's more like tagging along; breaching the circle of fandom is no easy feat, especially when you're not in costume, or a major fan, so I brought along two friends from school: Stephanie and Tobi (names alphabetized to avoid prioritization).

Initially, I was scared of bringing along other people; some people do not take well to concepts such as cosplay or slash fiction (not to mention the stuff that happens when the two mix in public places).

Then there was the fanfic issue.

Meet Remus and Sirius, also known as sir-not-appearing-in-this-film

Meet random quidditch players...
Given that the two people accompanying me were computer/internet savvy, I figured that they'd have run across the concept of fanfic. How they felt about it, and more importantly how they feel about fiction involving Harry's Wand in Ron's chamber of secrets, was another matter.

First came the costuming thing, since it'd kinda be readily apparent. So, I brought up going to the flick with some dedicated fans.

Tobi sorta gave a strange look; Steph lit up, saying her sister had done that sort of thing. Later on she even mentioned that she thought about getting the costume, but wasn't able...

Bingo.

(Too bad about no costume; I'm sure it would have been damn cute...)

The slash issue didn't arise untiil a bit later (as in walking to the event that night). I made a remark out there being "very wrong fanfiction out there".

Meet, um, someone in a cloak.
Just because...

Tobi looked over and said the words psycho fangirls live by: There's no such thing as "wrong" fanfiction.

Meet another caped crusader...
I knew we had a winner.

So, feeling a little better, we grabbed dinner at a really nice restaurant on Queen street called Everest, which I highly recommend. Sitting in the front window, we noticed some people who appeared to be wearing robes going toward the theatre area. I joked that it was probably my friends. I was told that probably plenty of people were showing up in costume...

More on that in a second.

We finished up (once again, great food) and made our way to the theatre. It was about an hour and a half before showtime so we expected a small riot. Sure, everything was sold out, but stuff was arranged so we didn't have to wait outside. Thank god; I was freezing.

Meet a grand magus, disguised as a muggle...

It was easy to find our friends.

Why? They were the ones in costume we saw...

...and that was about it for the cosplayer factor. Tragic really: my faith in the insanity of the masses was dimmed that night.

Well, there were a few people, but mostly little kids (which was cool) and people dressed up as unrelated wizards (which was less so). We found some people dressed in quidditch uniforms, so that was neat. Otherwise, the fangirls were alone in their fandom; the brood's non-conformist nature was maintained...

So within our crew the count stood as follows (with apologies to those I can't remember): We had a Harry and Draco (and they answered to it so I don't actually know their names), Xiola as Hermione, P-chan as Ginny Weasley, Darian as an impromptu Ron Weasley (he just happened to look the part), and various other people in cloaks and other paraphanelia.

The previous photos are the best approximation of the group. Sadly, there's one person who managed to duck all pictures; next time I'll have to try harder.

Line up the usual suspects...

Meet the clueless cameraman...

Kisa and Louise were dressed as Sirius and Remus, two characters who had yet to appear in the film series. Having never read the books, I decided to do some research as to why they chose those characters. So I searched google for the items Sirius, Remus, Harry, and Potter. 6 of the 10 sites on the first page were slash-related.

That cleared it up.

So the group, being the trailblazers that they were, decided to form their own line, given that the theatre would only set up one at a time. Perhaps it was the costumes, perhaps it was the look of caged desperation in the eyes of the fangirls, but nobody seemed to have a problem with them doing so.

One even lent P-chan a broom to pose with for a picture.

So when the actual line formed up, the group fought their way to the front, and nobody argued.

Psychosis can have privelleges.

At about this time, the lining up began. At the time of this report, however, the slash pairings are beginning. Well, there are other shots, but now the dirty minds go to work in...

Part 2: The slashing begins
